The Story
of Circadia

From Curiosity to a Global Professional Movement

From Cellular Research to Skin Care

In 1973, our founder,  Dr. Peter T. Pugliese was focused on cancer research and cellular biology. Skincare was not his field. But when his wife asked for help with a small wrinkle near her eye, he took a closer look.

He began studying the skin, not just what it looks like, but how it truly functions at a cellular level. What started as curiosity quickly became a lifelong pursuit. Understanding the skin at a deeper level, Dr. Pugliese pursued lasting results.

That knowledge would go on to shape the entire  professional skincare industry.  Chances are, you used his textbook in esthetics school.

A Pioneer in Skin Science and Education

At a time when the esthetics industry was still developing, Dr. Pugliese helped define it.

He was one of the first voices to connect clinical science and professional skincare. His work focused on teaching estheticians not just what to use, but why it works.

For over 40 years, he educated professionals around the world. He wrote key textbooks and contributed to industry publications. He also helped introduce key ingredients and concepts that are now standard in skincare.

His philosophy was simple. Understanding the skin leads to better treatment decisions. Better decisions lead to better outcomes.

The Foundation: Skin in Rhythm

Through his research, Dr. Pugliese identified a core truth about the skin:

It does not function the same way all day.

During the day, the skin focuses on protection. It defends against environmental stressors like UV exposure and pollution.

At night, the skin shifts. It moves into repair, renewal, and regeneration.

This natural cycle is known as the skin’s circadian rhythm.

This concept became the driving force behind Circadia’s formulas.

The name itself comes from the Latin circa diem, meaning “around the day.” It reflects a philosophy rooted in timing, biology, and alignment.

Circadia works with the skin’s natural processes instead of forcing results.

The Creation of Circadia

By the late 1990s, Dr. Pugliese had influenced thousands of professionals through education. This training opened a growing need.

Estheticians wanted products that matched what they were learning. They wanted science-based formulations made for real use in the treatment room.

Circadia was officially founded in 2001 by Dr. Pugliese. From the start, the brand chose to focus on one thing: Circadia would serve professionals.

  • It would remain wholesale only
  • The brand would not sell directly to consumers
  • It would support the esthetician

A Family Legacy That Continues to Grow

As the brand grew, Dr. Pugliese’s family became deeply involved. His grandson, Michael Q. Pugliese, began learning the business early. He worked in every part of the company, from operations to formulation.

Under Dr. Pugliese’s guidance, he gained scientific knowledge. He developed a deep respect for the professional community.

In 2006, Michael stepped into the role of CEO.

With that transition came growth, expansion, and innovation—but the foundation remained unchanged.

The mission stayed the same:

  • Support the professional
  • Lead with education
  • Deliver real results
